Restylane-L®, Restylane® Lyft, Restylane® Silk, Restylane® Defyne, Restylane® Refyne, Juvéderm® products, Radiesse®, Sculptra®, and Belotero® are dermal fillers that restore volume and fullness to the skin and help smooth out wrinkles and folds on the face. Other than Radiesse® and Sculptra®, they all consist of hyaluronic acid, a non-animal based substance that occurs naturally in the body. The difference between the hyaluronic acid fillers is the size of the gel particles.  Radiesse® is calcium hydroxyapatite and  Sculptra®  is poly-L lactic acid.

Restylane® Lyft, Restylane® Defyne, Restylane®Refyne, Radiesse®, Sculptra®, Juvéderm®Ultra PlusXC are used more for larger volume replacement. The effects of  Sculptra® may last up to 2 years or more. All the other products last approximately one year.  Restylane-L® and Restylane® Silk are used to enhance the lips thereby lessening wrinkles around the mouth. They are also used for hollows under the eyes, and other superficial fine lines. Restylane® Silk and Belotero® can be injected directly into fine lines. Radiesse® is a good filler not only for volumizing the face but also for treating aging hands. Sculptra®  is particularly good for filling the temples and hollows of the cheeks and is often preferred not only for its longer duration of action but also for causing a gradual build up of your own collagen over a 4-6 week period.

Fillers are injected directly into the skin with a very small needle. Topical numbing or dental blocks are used especially for volumizing the lips to reduce any discomfort associated with the injection itself. You may have tenderness, swelling and perhaps a little redness after the treatment. This usually resolves in a few days. As with any injection, bruising is always a risk. If bruising occurs, you may come in the next workday at no charge for a laser treatment that will significantly lighten the bruise or even return the skin to its normal appearance.

Radiesse® is used to provide fullness and to correct moderate to severe facial wrinkles, folds, and depressions. It is a good option for people who have lost fullness in their face due to aging or medication and want immediate correction. It consists of calcium hydroxyapatite microspheres suspended in a sodium carboxymethylcellulose gel carrier, which is a biocompatible, biodegradable material. It is the same composition as the mineral portion of bone and teeth. Radiesse® is injected directly into the skin with a very small needle. Topical or local numbing is used to reduce any discomfort during the treatment. After the treatment, you may have some redness, tenderness and swelling, which will resolve in a few days. As with any injection, bruising is always a risk. Radiesse® results can last up to a year or more for many patients. Individual results depend on age, skin type, lifestyle and how quickly your body metabolizes the material.

Sculptra® poly-L-lactic acid was approved as a dermal filler in 2004 in the United States. It increases the thickness of the skin and can be used to treat severe hollowness cause by lipoatrophy or certain medications. Within 2 days of injection, the patient looks as though nothing was done, but over the next 4-6 weeks natural collagen production is stimulated resulting in a more gradual correction. Many patients prefer Sculptra® not only due to its gradual correction, but also because it lasts approximately 2 years with some effects lasting up to four years.
